RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

Through existing research it is clear how important, in this fast moving technological generation, with all the advancement in water treatment, filtration and indeed electric generation, it shows how necessary continued research and development is. Without studies, research, testing and evaluation of previous PRO use in generating electricity the inherent problems would not be known.  As water is the life blood of the earth, research and development is the food of industry. Hindsight is a luxury business can ill afford. That is why we are committed to allocating 20% of our turnover towards R&D. This research has enabled us to monitor, tune and review certain osmosis processes and consider solutions to deliver manageable, affordable clean electricity using PRO as a means of generation.  

WORKING WITH R&D ORGANISATIONS 

Enables us to liaise with our suppliers and engineers to design our products to meet the needs of our clients. Our research is currently undertaken by several Universities who have departments, both scientific and engineering, that undertake studies related to osmosis.

OUR R&D CONCLUDES OUR PURE WATER PRO SYSTEMS  ARE VIABLE

“The primary barrier preventing the widespread use of PRO is the lack of effective membranes, which are the heart of osmotic power systems. Statkraft of Norway constructed the first PRO prototype plant by using cellulose based PRO membranes in 2009 but terminated it in 2014 mainly due to the low osmotic power generation ( 1 W/m2 ) and severe fouling. Based on Statkraft's analyses, the minimum power density of 3 W/m2 for hollow fibres or 5 W/m2 for flat sheet membranes is essential for this technology to be commercially viable. The desirable PRO membranes should possess (1) a substantially high water flux and robust mechanical strength to withstand the operation pressure and provide sustainable power output; (2) a low reverse salt flux to maintain an effective osmotic driving force across the membrane; and (3) low fouling propensity to sustain PRO operations using different feed streams.”

Features of PRO are no heat emission, no chemical reaction, stability under any weather condition, and the PRO system uses treated waste water, so it can be constructed near or in urban areas. We can only conclude from our own research as well, that Statkraft were a little premature in building their plant and this contributed to their findings of membrane blockages and low generation output. Whereas the PRO prototype plant tested for use in RO water treatment plants returned the data Statkraft had hoped for. There was a power output of between 4-8 KW using 8 x 10 PRO module CTA hollow fiber filters as well as using existing components and equipment available. Also used was a standard Pelton turbine to generate the power. Those results, from a fully automated year long tested PRO prototype generator plant, similar to those we are manufacturing, validate our commitment  for Pure Electric Power from pure water!
